Panchakarma is the combination of two sanskrit words Pancha which means Five and Karma which means actions. Panchakarma is the main element of natural healing through Ayurveda with others being Yoga, Meditation, Ayurvedic Diet.
Panchakarma consists of five treatments to detoxify and restore mind-body balance. The Traditional Panchakarma Consisted of five treatments
- Basti= Herbalized Oil or Decoction Enemas
- Nasya Karma= Herbalized Oil Administered Nasal Cleansing
- Vamana= Therapeutic Vomiting
- Virechana= Purgation
- Raktamokshana= Blood Letting
Although not all of it is practiced everywhere and is replaced with more gentle treatments, Panchakarma is still not for the ones cowering. It is an extensive treatment which may last anywhere from 3 Days to 21 Days depending on the type of Dosha each person may carry.
Types of Dosha in Ayurveda
Vata – It imparts qualities of space and air.
Pitta – It comprises qualities of Fire & Water
Kapha – Qualities reflecting Water and Earth

Pre-Panchakarma or Purvakarma
Before Panchakarma starts, a person is advised to cleanse the body. This is done by oiling up the bowels and pathways from inside. This is called Oleation. This Process lets the body loosen up and free toxins. You are also advised to avoid excessive travels , Physical Activities and Emotional Fluctuations.
Diet plays an important part in Panchakarma. Patient is advised to avoid meat and heavy diet. Instead you are supposed to have simple vegetarian meals or Kitchari.
Each Patient is assigned an Ayurveda doctor. The doctor examines your pulse, checks your tongue, check your hairs, skins and fill out a forms to get an idea of lifestyle patterns. Each persom has a different mind-body constitution or prakriti. Based on the consultation, Dosha is defined for the individual and therapies are recommended.
